Great Park

The Great Park in Irvine CA will be one of the largest municipal park environments when it is completed in ten years. It will also feature a variety of education offerings and modern sports and recreation facilities.

In November 2013, Irvine voters backed Measure V, which established that City Councilmembers have the final say on financial matters pertaining to Great Park. However, residents have complained about the board’s lack of accountability. Click for more.

Parks and Recreation

Grounded in history, and driven by community, the Orange County Great Park continues to grow and evolve on the site of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. When completed, it will be one of the largest municipal parks in the country. Today, the park’s 1,300 acres embrace recreation, competitive sports, cultural amenities, and a connection to nature.

Families can hone their athletic skills at the 194-acre Sports Complex, play tennis or soccer at the community courts, or catch a CUI basketball game. A new playground, splashpad, and baseball field are coming soon, as is a championship golf course.

Homebuyers can choose from an array of unique neighborhoods within the Great Park community, including Novel Park whose naming speaks to the joy found in unexpected moments. RSM Design worked closely with FivePoint Communities to create wayfinding, environmental graphic design, and placemaking that saturate visitors in the natural splendor of this Irvine neighborhood.

Sports

From championship soccer fields and tennis courts to a community garden, amphitheater, and a tethered balloon ride, Great Park offers world-class facilities for sports and recreation. It also includes education, art, and agriculture and is a non-aviation reuse of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.

The 194-acre Orange County Great Park Sports Complex draws players of all ages for youth and adult team practices and games; local, national, and international tournaments; and professional teams and clubs. Its crown jewel, the Anteater Ballpark, is a state-of-the-art stadium with one of the best baseball playing surfaces on the West Coast, complete with a festive seating area on the grass berm.

The Great Park Sports Complex also features 25 lighted tennis courts, including one championship court with seating for 132 spectators and a Tennis Academy offering lessons for youth and adults. There are also four lighted basketball courts and two lawn areas that can be used for soccer or other sports. This article is worth reading.

Visitors can also explore a constructed two-and-a-half mile canyon, a daylighted existing stream, a large lake, and a cultural terrace, along with an aviation museum, conservatory/botanical garden, sports park, and more.

In addition, children living in Great Park can attend outstanding schools that are known for creative project-based learning and technology education. Currently, Great Park houses the Irvine Unified School District’s Beacon Park Elementary and Portola High School. Both schools are rated a 9 out of 10 by Niche.

The neighborhood’s edgy vibe is evident throughout Great Park, with a variety of options for cafe dining and grocery shopping near home. The Palm Court Arts Complex, created from renovated squadron support buildings, serves as the park’s cultural campus and hosts a variety of public art exhibitions. The re-purposed military structures also include the Great Park Gallery and Artist Studios, as well as a shaded outdoor performance plaza adorned with 54 Canary Island date palms.
